INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Kuwait Bilingual School (KBS) Primary Department! The
aim of this handbook is to explain to parents our expectations
for our students and parents. We believe that it is very
important to have a strong home – school connection. In this
way, we can work together to ensure that our students receive
the best possible education in a happy, safe and disciplined
environment. Parents will receive regular newsletters, which
will be posted on the school website, to keep them informed of
not only academic plans but also any extra-curricular activities
and events which are happening in school. Parents are encouraged
to check the website on a regular basis and have frequent
contact with their child’s teachers.
This is a very exciting time to belong to KBS as we officially
launch the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years
Program (PYP). This program has been developed with
International Schools in mind and aims to help build character
as well as provide an education which will help equip our
students to take on responsibilities as "leaders of tomorrow"
which, as you know, is part of our school's motto.
We recommend that you take time to go through this handbook
carefully and keep your copy safely for future reference. It is
divided into three sections:
1.
The Vision, Mission, Aims and Objectives of Kuwait Bilingual
School
2.
The Academic Program
3.
General Information
Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any
questions. We look forward to working with you this year!
Section One
The Vision, Mission, Aims and Objectives of Kuwait Bilingual
School
VISION
Kuwait Bilingual School was established in September 1998 in Al
Jahra City, Kuwait. Its foundation was a landmark in educational
provision in the district, offering a co-educational, bilingual
private school education for people of the city and the State of
Kuwait.
The school’s vision involves the provision of a school worthy of
this millennium. Every attempt will be made to develop KBS as a
progressive school, whose resources will be utilized for the
constant upgrading of its faculty, programs, facilities and
services.
No educational institution can set a direction for itself
without consciously shaping the policies that guide it. Most
“good” schools have developed as a result of planned, deliberate
actions not by default. Kuwait Bilingual School policy manual
has therefore been established for the following reasons:
a.
To provide continuity and stability. This provides the
school community with a clear understanding of expectations of
them and direction for the school (Aims and objectives)

-
To clarify roles and responsibilities.

common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to
create a better and more peaceful world."
We believe that a school’s curriculum includes all those student
activities—academic and non-academic—for which the school takes

not only in the units of inquiry, but also for any teaching and
learning that goes on within the classroom, and in life outside
the school.
The six themes are:
·
Who we are
·
Where we are in place and time
·
How we express ourselves
·
How the world works
·
How we organize ourselves
·
Sharing the planet
GRADES AND REPORT CARDS
At KBS assessment is an integral part of your child's education.
Teachers will use a variety of methods to record your child's
progress. These may include teacher observation, tests, quizzes,
written assignments and individual or group projects. Samples of
students' work will be collected in a portfolio, which will be
shown to parents at conference times.
Report cards will be issued at the end of each quarter. Parent
conferences will be held following their issue. Dates can
be found on the school calendar and on the website.
Grades are recorded electronically on SKOOLEE. (SKOOLEE,
program may be accessed from the school website) Each parent
will be issued a password at the beginning of the school year,
to enable them to log on and follow their child's progress at
any time.
The Primary Department uses a seven point grading scale which
equates to the following percentages:
7 90% - 100% - Excellent
6 80% – 89% - Very Good
5 65% – 79% - Good
4 50% – 64% - Pass
3 45% – 49% - Fail
2 40% – 44% - Fail
1 less than 40% – Fail
HOMEWORK
Homework is a necessary part of each student’s educational
program and is also a means of strengthening skills and
reinforcing comprehension gained in the classroom. Weekly
homework schedules are posted on the KBS web site each Thursday.
This schedule includes all of the homework for the coming week,
as well as, announced tests. Project due dates and general
reminders are also included. Parents should regularly check with
their children to make sure that homework assignments are being
completed and that students have a quiet and suitable spot at
home in which to study. Homework will be assigned in all core
subjects during the course of a week. Homework is not given
during a major holiday. Duration for daily study and homework is
about 90 minutes.
There are several types of homework, the daily homework aims at
providing the student the chance to practice independently at
home; this homework is not corrected for "right answers;" it is
checked by the teachers for effort. Correction is done as a
group in the class.
Other forms of homework include, projects, preparing for new
lessons, … etc.
No tests or quizzes will be scheduled the day after a holiday.
HOMEWORK DIARY
Each student is issued with a homework diary. Students will use
this to record their homework and any test dates. In addition,
this is intended to be a home – school communication log.
Parents are encouraged to write notes in the homework diary for
teachers if they have any questions or concerns. Parents should
also check the diary on a daily basis in case teachers have
written notes.
REMEDIAL CLASSES
Remedial classes will be offered in Arabic, English and
Mathematics to those students who need extra support. Parents
will be informed if the school feels that their child is at risk
of failing in any of these subjects. Classes will be held for
two hours on Saturdays. Please note that the fees for remedial
classes are not included in the school fees.
TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks are issued to students at the beginning of each
academic year. Teachers will make a record of serial numbers.
Names should be written in the front of each textbook in the
allocated space.
Care of textbooks is the responsibility of the student. Please
ensure that your child takes good care of his /her books.
Lost or damaged books
If books are lost or damaged in any way, then parents will be
charged for the cost of replacement, which may include shipping
charges.
WEEKLY PLANS
Each Thursday, teachers will post homework plans for the
following week on the school website. These plans are for
Arabic, English, Mathematics and Science and will include
spelling words to be learnt, homework assignments and any tests
for that week. Hard copies may be requested if parents do not
have internet access.

General Information
ABSENCE
Parents are requested not to take children out of school on
vacation during school time. The holidays are published on the
school calendar, which is issued at the beginning of each
academic year. Any unexcused absence disrupts your child’s
education and as such is not permitted.
Should a child not attend school for medical reasons, then
parents are requested to call the school’s Medical Officer. He
/she will inform the child’s teachers, who will make every
effort to ensure that letters and homework assignments are sent
home if a student is likely to be ill for more than two days.
Students should NOT be sent to school if they are suffering from
a fever, diarrhea, vomiting or contagious diseases.
ANNUAL CALENDAR
The academic year consists of two semesters and four quarters.
Semester one is from September to January. Semester two is from
March to June. All school holidays are shown on the calendar.
Parents are therefore asked to familiarize themselves with
school holidays to ensure that students are in school during
teaching time.
The school calendar is published on the school website.
ART CLASSES
Parents are requested to purchase an art apron for these
lessons. Alternatively, students may bring an old tee shirt or
long shirt.
ATTENDANCE
Primary school hours are: 7-30am to 2-30pm Sunday through
Thursday
All students are expected to attend throughout the school year.
Attendance data is noted on the school report cards. Excess
absence may require a student to re-sit a grade. This is in
accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines.
AWARDS
Throughout the school year, students will be awarded
certificates for demonstrating a positive attitude, good
citizenship, excellent learning habits and / or for collecting
merits. Certificates will be presented in Morning Routine or
Assembly.
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Parents are invited to Back to School Night, early in the
first quarter, when teachers present their course
descriptions, goals, curricula, expectations, grading policy and
regulations. Teachers prepare handouts with this information.
Dates will be posted on the school calendar and website.
BIRTHDAY PARTIES
At KBS we do not celebrate students’ birthdays by holding
parties. We therefore request that parents do not send birthday
cake or presents to school. We encourage parents to hold
birthday parties out of school hours at home.
BOOK BAGS
Book bags should fit in the lockers. The school provides a
special homework schedule to reduce the number of books the
students takes home every day. Therefore there is no need for a
student to carry all his books home every day.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
KBS offers a school transport service for students. The cost is
based on the distance from school and the number of students
utilizing the transport. All buses have an adult supervisor.
Please read the bus contract carefully regarding student
behavior and rules of collection. The behavioral expectations
are as follows:
·
Students riding the bus are expected to be well behaved and
follow the instructions of the Supervisor at all times.
·
Students must behave courteously and show respect to the
Supervisor.
·
Students should not litter the buses.
·
Students are responsible for taking their own bags on and off
the bus.
In case of repeated misbehavior in the bus, a administration may
remove the student from the buses.
CANTEEN
The school canteen is open every day during morning snack and
lunch break.
CLEAN CAMPUS
We are proud of the way our campus continues to improve its
appearance. Our campus must be free of litter. Students must
dispose of trash in trash bins. Students cannot throw trash on
the ground and expect the cleaning staff to pick it up.
Canteen service will be suspended if this rule is not followed.
COMMUNICATION
School – Home
Communication between school and family is of utmost importance.
The primary mode of communication from school to home is via the
KBS website or emails or SMS in case of emergency.
Students are expected to deliver school letters and circulars to
their parents on the day of distribution. Please check our
website at www.kbs-edu.com for important information. Remember
that each core subject teacher posts weekly homework schedules
on Thursdays.
Home -School
Parents often need to contact the school for various reasons.
Below is a “line of communication” table to ensure that parents
are aware of the correct person to speak with in different
situations. If the first person in the chain is unable to answer
your query satisfactorily, then parents should go to step two
etc.

DISCIPLINE
Kuwait Bilingual School discipline policy is predicated upon the
need for a secure, ordered school environment, where optimal
learning can take place, in which individual rights are
respected and where the promotion of ethical values and personal
responsibility are nurtured effectively on a daily basis. We
emphasize respect for the dignity of the child and primarily for
positive reinforcement and a school aura where students are at
ease with their teachers.
We will strive through effective communication and the fostering
of cooperation, for the maximum consistency of approach to
discipline between home and school. We emphasize a quiet
discipline where students are counseled about inappropriate
behavior and shown better ways of acting in tune with our school
values. We expect all KBS students to accept full responsibility
and the consequences for their behavior and actions; this is
viewed as part of education and getting ready for real life
situations.
There are two distinct aspects to the system: behavior related
consequences and the teaching of self-discipline strategies.
Behavior related consequences can be positive or negative. The
Primary School operates a merit system. Teachers may choose to
reward students by giving them a “merit” stamp. There is a
special page for this at the back of the student homework diary.
Merits may be given for a variety of reasons: for example, being
helpful, for submitting an excellent piece of work, for
completing extra homework assignments, for being a model student
etc. Students will be issued with certificates according to the
scale below:
25 merits = bronze certificate
50 merits = silver certificate
100 merits = gold certificate
150 merits = platinum certificate
200 merits = ruby certificate
250 merits = sapphire certificate
Merit lists will be published on the internet and on school
bulletin boards
From time to time, students may display behavior that detracts
from their own learning or the learning of others. Depending on
the type of misbehavior, there are a variety of consequences.
However, in every situation, staff will consider the severity of
the infraction, other factors surrounding the incident and the
past record of the same or similar infractions.
If there develops a pattern of misbehavior, the School can
utilize a number of other consequences and interventions aimed
to directly teach self-discipline. These can include counseling
services, recess detentions, after-school detentions, parent
conferences, daily behavior reports and mentoring.
The Homework Diary can be used as a tool in behavior
management. It is not only intended to help students manage
homework and assignments, but also to provide parents and
teachers with a method for daily communication. When a student
is not prepared properly or is a behavior problem during class,
the teacher may write a comment in the planner. When this or any
other comment is written in the planner, the student should show
it to his or her parent, and the parent is encouraged to sign
the planner to indicate that it has been read.
GENERAL SCHOOL BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS
Students should:
1.
Attend school punctually.
2.
Wear the proper school uniform with the absence of
jewelry and make-up.
3.
Be courteous, honest, humble, respectful and cooperative

instructions, obey without argument and cooperate with
teachers/adults.

school and community.
6.
Accept responsibility for themselves and their actions.

for cleaning and tidying.
14.
Project a positive image of themselves and their school.
15.
Refrain from fighting, kicking, pushing, bullying,
cheating, shouting, swearing, taunting others and intolerance.
EARLY RELEASE
Students may not leave school during the day without a leaving
slip. If a student is sick, then the school medical officer will
ring home to inform parents and a leaving slip will be
completed. This will be circulated to the child’s teachers.
Parents are not expected to remove students from school except
in an emergency or for a medical / dental appointment. In such
cases, the parents should call the Medical Officer to state the
reason for departure and whether or not the student will return
before the end of the school day.
EDUCATIONAL TRIPS
Educational trips provide students and teachers with
opportunities for learning and teaching beyond the classroom.
In addition, a written notification indicating the purpose of
each trip will be sent before every trip. A student must be in
school on the day of the trip in order to attend any field trip
or special event. Bus and entrance fees will be collected for
each trip. The School reserves the right to withdraw any student
from a planned field trip, with no refund, if the child has poor
behavior.
ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT
Mobile phones, computer games, IPODS, IPADS and any other
electronic devices should not to be brought in to school. If a
student is found using anything of this nature, it will be
confiscated. The school cannot accept responsibility for any
loss or damage incurred.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Each semester students will be given the opportunity to enrol in
after school clubs, drama and sports activities. These are not
mandatory, but will be offered on a first come, first served
basis. These will cost 20KD per activity.
Clubs will run on Thursdays from 2-45p.m to 3-45p.m.
Sports and Drama activities will be held on Sundays, Tuesdays
and Wednesdays from 2-45p.m to 4p.m.
A full list of activities available will be sent home to parents
at the beginning of each semester.
GIFTS AND DONATIONS
KBS is very grateful for any donations to the school. Donations
of any kind should benefit all students. All donations will be
gratefully received upon the understanding that these are given
free of any expectation.
Parents who make donations of library books will be recognized
by the placing of a special label on the inside cover.
Whilst administration and faculty are always gratified when
parents wish to send gifts in appreciation, the school does have
a stated policy. We therefore request that parents do not send
expensive gifts but small tokens of appreciation such as
flowers, chocolates, which should not cost more than 5KD.
This policy does not apply if a faculty member or student is
leaving the school.
GUIDANCE SERVICES
The Counseling Office is dedicated to helping students with both
academic and personal concerns. Our Guidance Department supports
and promotes the emotional, social and academic growth of all
students at KBS.
In addition, students will find a number of faculty members
available to them to help with questions, to address problems
and frustrations, and to guide them in positive decision making.
The Counselor, Head of Stage and all staff members are willing
and eager to work with individual students on all matters.
HEALTH AND DIET
At KBS we try to impress the importance of a healthy diet. In
this respect students should not bring soda drinks, chocolate or
candy to school. Fast food is not permitted.
We encourage students to bring a nutritious sandwich, freshly
cut vegetable sticks, pure fruit juice or pieces of fresh fruit.
Students are taught never to waste food and any uneaten items
will be wrapped and sent home.
Students may also purchase food from the school canteen.
HOMEROOM PERIOD
Each student has a designated homeroom. Students will meet with
their homeroom teacher on a daily basis. The homeroom teacher
should be the link between home and school. The homeroom teacher
has a wide range of responsibilities, including the following:
·
Acting as a pastoral advisor to the student
·
Acting as a discipline coordinator
·
Acting as the link between parents and school in written or
verbal communications
·
Monitoring attendance, tardiness and uniform
·
Ensuring that students receive homework etc when absent
Parents are advised to address any non-academic issues first
with the homeroom teacher, then if necessary with the School
Counselor. Academic issues should be addressed first with the
teacher, then with the department head. The homeroom teacher
will also coordinate meetings with parents, should they wish to
see a number of teachers to discuss an issue.
IDENTIFICATION OF BELONGINGS
Student belongings (books, copybooks, jackets, PE Kit, bags,
etc.) must be clearly marked with the student’s name.
LOST PROPERTY
Any unclaimed items will be placed in the Lost Property box.
This will be kept with the receptionist. Items will be kept for
one month. After this time, unclaimed items will be donated to
charity.
MEDICAL FILES
All students MUST have a medical file. These should be brought
to the medical office upon enrolment. Parents should notify the
school immediately if there are any health issues, such as
allergies, asthma, diabetes or epilepsy. This information will
then be shared with the child’s teachers.
Routine checks are carried out throughout the year by Ministry
of Health officials.
MEDICATION
For safety reasons it is preferred that all medications be given
at home before and after school. If this is not possible, the
medication should be brought to the Medical Officer by a parent.
Teachers are not permitted to give medication to students.
All medication should be clearly labeled with the following
information:
·
Child’s name
·
Name of medicine
·
Details of dosage
·
Frequency of dosage
MEETING WITH YOUR CHILDS TEACHERS
Parent conference days are held throughout the year, each time a
report card is issued. In addition, parents may schedule an
appointment at any time if they have any concerns, by contacting
the school receptionist. Please note that teachers cannot
discuss your child without a scheduled appointment.
MORNING ROUTINE
On Sundays, school commences with Morning Routine. Following the
prayer and National Anthem, announcements are given by
administration or faculty. Certificates and other awards may be
presented at this time. This is a compulsory part of the school
day. On Monday to Thursday, students line up in the playground
when the bell rings and then go to homerooms when instructed to
do so.
OPEN DOOR POLICY
The administration operates an “Open Door Policy.” Parents are
always welcome to call or come in to ask questions, discuss
concerns or offer suggestions at any time. If possible, please
call first for an appointment.
PARENT CONFERENCES
Parent conferences are scheduled throughout the year following
the distribution of report cards. (See school calendar for
dates). This is an opportunity for parents to meet with each of
their child’s teachers, see samples of their work and discuss
progress.
PLAYGROUND SUPERVISION
Playground supervision begins at 7:15a.m. each morning. Two
members of faculty will be on duty each day. Similarly, teachers
will be on duty at 2:30p.m. Please ensure that students are in
school no later than 7:25a.m. in the morning and collected
promptly at 2:30p.m. The school cannot accept responsibility for
the safety of students who are dropped off / collected outside
of the advertised times.
SCHOOL TELEPHONE
Students may use the school telephone for EMERGENCY calls,
before school, during snack and lunch, and after school, only
with our authorization. Calling to ask for permission to go to a
friend’s house is not an emergency.
SLEEP
It is essential that elementary students have a fixed bed time
and that they receive sufficient sleep. Students cannot perform
well if they are tired. Regular sleep patterns lead to
psychologically and physiologically healthy children. Whilst
individuals are different, it is recommended that on average,
elementary students need 9 to 10 hours sleep per night.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Students in grades 4 and above elect KBS Student Council
Representatives. The Student Council has a faculty advisor. The
Student Council serves as a vehicle for students to exercise
effective leadership; address concerns coherently; sponsor
school activities and service projects; and accomplish tasks
efficiently.
STUDENT PERSONAL INFORMATION UPDATES
Your home and emergency telephone numbers and email addresses
are essential for the school to have on file. Please notify the
school of any information changes.
TARDY STUDENTS
Tardiness is treated seriously at KBS and is recorded on the
school report card. All students are expected to arrive no later
than 7:25a.m. Registration is taken when the bell rings at
7:30a.m. Students not in school by 7:30a.m will be marked
absent.
Names of tardy students will be recorded and tardy students will
not be allowed to go to class during the lesson time as that
will disturb the lesson going on in class. Students will be
allowed to go to class when the lesson is finished. As a result
tardy students will be marked absent for that lesson and will
lose participation marks. The lesson will not be repeated for
him/her.
UNIFORM
All students are required to wear full school uniform with the
official logos. Parents are advised to purchase more than one
uniform set to allow for washing. Uniforms are available
throughout the year at the school Uniform Store. Please
ensure that each item of clothing is clearly marked with your
child’s name.
